Juneteenth: Freedom, Ownership, and the Legacy We Build Next

Every year on June 19th, Americans celebrate Juneteenth—a day that marks freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of opportunity.

But Juneteenth is more than a historical event.

It is a reminder of what happens when people refuse to give up on hope, dignity, education, ownership, and the right to build something for future generations.

What Is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved African Americans that they were free.

This announcement came more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863.

For many formerly enslaved people, Juneteenth represented the first day they truly learned of their freedom.

It became a day of celebration, family gatherings, worship, education, storytelling, and community building.

Today, Juneteenth is recognized as a federal holiday in the United States and serves as an opportunity to reflect on both how far we’ve come and how much work remains to be done.

Freedom Is More Than a Date

Freedom is not just the absence of chains.

Freedom is access.

Freedom is opportunity.

Freedom is ownership.
